Traditional Jigs & Fixtures for Handtools

A Manual of Devices for Woodworking

Graham Blackburn

Improve your handtool skills with traditional jigs and fixtures.

When traditional woodworkers wanted to improve the speed, accuracy, and repeatability of their work, they developed clever jigs and fixtures such as a shooting board, a flexible straightedge, or a grasshopper gauge. However, the vast majority of these aids were user-made and disappeared from sight when powertool woodworking took over in the 20th century. The result? Many of today’s handtool woodworkers often experience unnecessary frustration because they don’t know that simple shop-made aids can vastly improve their efforts.

Traditional Jigs & Fixtures for Hand Toolschanges all that. It reintroduces traditional user-made devices, unveils others that the author, Graham Blackburn, grew up with, and expands upon those with more recent adaptations. Most of the handmade jigs are simple to construct and use – and once you’ve tried them in your shop, you’ll quickly see how they can minimize frustration and maximize success in your handtool woodworking.
